Thread Veins - Broken Capillaries
Thread veins on the legs, commonly known as spider veins or, more correctly, telangiectasia they are very common and can be very unsightly if rather prominent. They can occur at any site on the body but mainly the leg and facial areas. Approximately 20% of 20 year old women have thread veins on the legs and 50% of 50 year olds. The veins vary in size, colour and type ranging from fine red ones to larger purple or deeper blue veins. They can cause significant cosmetic embarrassment and often interfere with the ability to wear short skirts in the summer months.
The reason why people develop thread veins on the legs is not fully understood but the known and most important causes include heredity, pregnancy and hormones and minor injuries. They can also be associated with varicose veins and follow on from varicose vein surgery.
Facial and Leg Veins - The Facts
How does it work?
The laser light is absorbed by the blood inside the vein. This heats up the wall of the vein which collapses, and the vein then dissolves.
Sclerotherapy is the injection of medication which collapses the vein. The vein then dissolves. Intensed Light (IPL) is broadband light energy that enables large areas to be treated with a single discharge. This short wavelength visible light is passed through filters which can be adjusted to match the patients' skin types. Intense Pulsed Light is ideal for the treatment of superficial skin lesions. The advantage of IPL is that large areas can be treated.
How many treatments are needed?
A series of 3 to 6 treatments is recommended at monthly intervals for leg veins. Treatment of facial veins is easier and often only 3 treatments are required.
Does skin colour make any difference?
All skin types can be treated and skin colour makes little difference to the benefits of treatment.
What are the costs likely to be?
The initial consultation is offered free of charge with no obligation to undergo treatment. Costs vary depending on the area being treated.
Is Intense light treatment safe?
IPL treatment of facial thread veins (or telangiectasia) is an alternative to injecting the vessels with a sclerosing solution and is suitable for the treatment of many red skin blemishes on the face and upper body.
A Green light is used to treat pigment irregularities and yellow light is effective for treating vascular conditions. Excellent results are achieved with liver spots, age spots, freckles, thread veins and rosacea.
