Frequently Asked Questions
Premier Laser Hair Removal with Candela Gentlelase.
At Thérapie we strive to deliver the most up to date and efficient laser hair removal system available on the market.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: Prices for Candela Gentlelase laser hair removal may vary depending on the area to be treated. Following your free consultation with one of our highly qualified and professional laser therapists, you will be guaranteed to be quoted the most competitive price but with the exceptional service to match!
Q: Are you being sold Laser treatments when the machine is actually a low powered IPL?
A: Beware - many salons and clinics offer IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and are technically not lasers at all. These are generally much lower powered machines, and therefore less effective than Medical Lasers. The unsettling thing is – with the lack of regulation in Ireland, anyone can buy a low powered machine and claim they are offering true laser hair removal. These machines do, at best, a poor job, and in the wrong hands can cause quite a lot of damage. It’s VITAL you find out what their equipment actually is, so ask! Make sure the Clinic only uses medical lasers that have the FDA stamp of approval, as this means they are proven to work.
Q: What can I expect on the day of my treatment?
A: The treatment is performed by a highly qualified laser technician. It is extremely fast, a little uncomfortable, but easier than waxing! The area may feel a little warm, so we recommend applying aloe vera after. Avoid any heat for the next 24 hs (showers, steam rooms, excessive exercise, etc.)It is also essential to use an SPF througout the course of your treatment, especially in the summer months. At Thérapie we have a wide range of sun products available.
Q: How tanning or false tan can affect your treatment
A: All laser hair removal candidates should be at their lightest skin tone on the day of each treatment. Having even the slightest tan on the area to be treated can put you at risk of an adverse reaction to your laser hair removal treatment.
Please note if you attend your appointment with a tan present on the area, your therapist will be unable to proceed with the treatment.
Q: How many treatments are required?
A: Every treatment, like every patient, is unique. Your laser practitioner will decide what is best for you based on your needs and expectations. As laser is a progressive treatment, multiple sessions are required, a minimun of 6 treatments is generally recommended depending on the area to be treated. While results vary from client to client, maintenance treatments may be required. Each treatment takes place every 4-10 weeks depending on the area and how many treatments you have. The human body is not an exact science; this is why the amount of treatments required and results can vary from one client to another.
Q: Can I continue to wax in between treatments?
A: There is no need for any method of hair removal between treatments. That means no waxing, threading or tweezing as this will disturb the normal hair growth pattern. Bleaching is also put of the question, as this will remove the pigment from the hair leaving nothing for the laser to be attracted to. Only shaving is recommended.
Facts about laser hair removal
Epilation by laser became available to the general public in the mid 1990s. It was performed experimentally for around 20 years before then. IPL (intense pulsed light) epilators use xenon flash lamps that emit full spectrum light, but they are technically not a laser. Phototricholysis or photoepilation, normally known as laser and light-based methods, are more recognised as laser hair removal. In 1998, a group at Massachusetts General Hospital authored one of the first published articles describing laser hair removal.
The dermatology community has widely accepted the benefits and advantages of using laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is now widely practiced. Dermatology literature regularly features published literature and reviews of laser hair removal methods, safety, and efficacy.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
The main principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis (SPTL). Laser hair removal works by causing localised damage in the hair follicle while not heating the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark materials (melanin) so the laser energy can be absorbed by the dark objects in the skin but with much more speed and intensity. The dark matter in the skin is known as chromophore and it can be naturally occurring or it can be artificially introduced.
Melanin is targeted selectively by hair removal lasers:
The primary chromophore considered for all hair removal lasers currently on the market is melanin. Melanin is found naturally in the skin because it gives skin and hair its colour. In hair there are two types of melanin: eumelanin gives hair its black or brown colour and pheomelanin gives hair a blonde or red colour. Only black or brown hair can be removed due to the selective absorption of the photons of laser light.
Both men and women utilise laser hair removal services to have unwanted or excess hair removed. Laser hair removal is performed all over the body, from head to toe. Laser hair removal works best with coarse, dark hair. The ideal combination is light skin and dark hair but new laser technology are now able to target patients with dark skin and dark hair.
The Food and Drug Administration in the US have approved hair removal lasers for permanent hair reduction since 1997. Laser hair removal has since become highly popular because of its speed and convenience, although much of the efficacy depends on the skill and experience of the laser operator. The choice of laser technology at the clinic also plays a very important role. On especially larger areas, some patients will need touch up treatments after 3-8 treatments. A tiny minority of people have reported that they are unresponsive to laser hair removal treatment. This has not been confirmed but it is likely that the laser operator needed more training on the best practice for the laser machine.
